Tips to Improve Air Flow
Ever notice how the temperature can change from room to room inside your home? If this is something you have experienced in your home, you probably have poor air flow. The effects of this dilemma can extend far beyond one room being a little colder or warmer than another. Serious air flow problems can lead to damage of your HVAC units and high energy bills.
But you are in luck! There are several checks that you can do at home on your own, and for the steps that require a little help, Four Seasons Home Services is here to assist you.
Poor Air flow Checks-
- Asses the problem- In order to understand which parts of your home need improvement, you need to travel around your home and pay attention to the temperature differences. Figure out which rooms are receiving the least amount of heating or air conditioning, and this is where your improvements will begin.
- Adjust the supply and return registers- Each room in your home should have both a supply and return vent. These are the vents located at the ends of the homes duct work. The supply vent will supply the hot or cold air that is generated by the furnace or air conditioner, and the return vent will inhale air back into the duct work to be reheated or cooled by the HVAC units. If either vent is covered or closed, it will prevent proper air flow in that room. Check to make sure that these vents are open, and remove any furniture that may be blocking the vent. If there are rooms in the home that receive a surplus amount of heating or cooling, you should close their registers half way to force the air to the other rooms that are struggling to get good air flow.
- Adjust the dampers- If your duct work has dampers, these can be adjusted to direct more air to the rooms that are not getting enough air. Dampers are metal plates that are located at certain points in the duct work. They can be closed or opened to for the air to flow in which ever direction you choose.
- Replace the furnace filter- A dirty air filter is one of the main contributors to bad air flow. The filter should be checked every 30 days and replaced at least every 90 days. If it appears to have build-up on it, you should replace it rather than take a chance and leave it in the system.
- Clean the blower motor- If you have been running the system with a dirty filter or without a filter, you need to have the blower motor professionally cleaned by an HVAC technician. A dirty blower motor does not function efficiently and could be causing your air flow problem.
- Have a Duct Cleaning performed- The duct work is the transportation system for the air in your home. If it has never been cleaned, there is probably a build-up or dust and debris in the ducts. These particles become attached to the inside of the duct work and prevent the air from moving smoothly from the furnace to the target room. A professional certified duct cleaning can clear up this problem for you. I have a question. It’s like this. My brother-in-law sets up our AC thermostat at 69 or sometimes lower than that. I want it warmer in my office and bedroom, so I usually close the vents in those rooms. The vent in our bathroom is closed too. My question is, does closing vents can cause problems on our bill or the unit? How about if I do close vents during winter, when the heater is on?
You should use the mechanical dampers near the supply trunk if you have them? If you don’t have them you can have them installed by an hvac contractor as long as there is access to your duct work? This will allow you to adjust the air flow to each vent and will save you money by deverting the airflow where you want and inturn save you a little money. Hope this helps?
